ŁUKASZ SUROWIEC – Dwa metry pod ziemią / Six feet under

A minimalist composition in the form of a hole in the ground filled with disturbed, splashing seawater. The hole’s design is meant to aesthetically resemble traditional well casings or city fountains. The height of the water surface in the hole will reflect the actual sea level (the Baltic horizon).

Projekt konkursowy, Łukasz Surowiec, dzięki uprzejmości artysty.

The sculpture’s title is a reference to the Northern Park in Sopot, placed at a height of six feet above sea level, according to geodetic maps. The water level within the hole will align with the real sea level. The water will be housed in a custom-made tank, equipped with a mechanism for producing realistic sea waves.

It is a fact that Sopot is situated above a body of water that is connected to the waters of the entire planet. And every day those waters increase in volume. The visual inspiration for the project comes from images of the sinking freezing permafrost grounds. Climatologists refer to this phenomenon as “a ticking climate bomb”, which is considered one of the most dangerous and constitutes a major threat to the continuation of life as we know it. The proposed sculpture has the potential to be a public attraction; it can entertain but also cause rightful distress.
